Mandi Updates: Cotton Wholesale Prices Rise Slightly across Benchmark Markets

The wholesale prices of cotton rose across the benchmark markets as of April 6, according to the data from the Agmarknet portal run by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The month-on-month average wholesale prices of cotton in April increased to Rs 7,179.11 per quintal from Rs 7,134. 

Regions where the month-on-month wholesale prices of cotton increased are Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Telangana, and Punjab. In Haryana, the prices increased by 1.2% to Rs 6,852 per quintal, and in Punjab by almost a percent to Rs 6,512. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the prices rose slightly by around 0.9% to Rs 7,100 and by almost a percent to Rs 7,578, respectively.

However, the wholesale prices of cotton fell marginally in Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. In Karnataka, the prices slumped by 2.2% to Rs 7,614 per quintal, in Rajasthan by 0.7% to Rs 6,784, in Gujarat by around 0.3% to Rs 7,462, and in Maharashtra by 0.4% to Rs 7,257.

Cotton is a kharif crop. It is majorly grown in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Besides India, cotton is widely grown in the US, China, and Brazil.
