North America, Biggest Market for India’s Turmeric Exports: Trade Promotion Council of India
According to the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), India’s turmeric exports touched 236 million dollar (around Rs 1,632 crore) last year (2018) and North America has emerged as the largest market for the product.
According to the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), India’s turmeric exports touched 236 million dollar (around Rs 1,632 crore) last year (2018) and North America has emerged as the largest market for the product.
Mohit Singla, TPCI Chairman in a statement on 26th June 2019 said, “We are the global leaders in turmeric & North America is the biggest regional market for the commodity and Europe is the fastest growing market”.
He added that “Turmeric ranks 3rd in the total exports of spices from India”.
Singla said that the other importing nations of Indian turmeric are the US, the UAE, the UK, Iran, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Japan and Malaysia.
Other nations that competes India in turmeric exports include Indonesi, Myanmar and the Netherlands, he mentioned.
Singla also said, “India is the largest producer and exporter of turmeric in the entire world, with exports recorded at $236 million in the year 2018”.
Further, he told that the growing demand of curcumin - a substance, which is found in turmeric, in the pharmaceutical, food & cosmetic industries is a big factor driving the growth of the spice in the international market.
He also suggested that the positioning of turmeric as ‘anti-cancer pharma’ brand can take the exports level at greater heights.
