Operation Green aims to control fluctuation in ‘TOP’ prices

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has reassured the farmers in India that they were his ‘TOP’ priority. He said ‘TOP’ here means - tomato, onion and potato. He added that for this they have launched an 'Operation Green' for the farmers.

Prime Minister said just as the Amul model was successful in the dairy sector, Operation Green will also be helpful to farmers. TOP prices hold heavy political importance in the country. Moreover, variable prices of tomato, onion and potato have frequently impacted electoral prospects of incumbent government.

About Operation Green

Operation Green was announced in the 2018-19 Union Budget with a cost of Rs 500 crore to stabilize the supply as well as price of TOP crops. While the dipping prices of TOP crops hit the growers, when the prices skyrocket the consumers are also affected. Operation Green aims to control fluctuation in TOP prices by creating linkages and infrastructure involving the growers, food processing industry and market. Recently government has approved guidelines for Rs 500 crore Operation Green scheme to increase production and processing of food crops.

Under the scheme, government has arranged special measures and grants-in-aid to ensure improved production of TOP crops and to boost value chain. The scheme also intends to cut post-harvest losses by creating farm gate infrastructure, agro-logistics and storage capacity that in return will help boost the processing capacities and value addition. A market intelligence network will also be formed to gather and collect real-time data on demand, supply and cost of these crops. The scheme is said to increase storage and food-processing infrastructure at 23 pre-identified centers in 20 states.
