Idukki: Cardamom marks record market price. In the scenario of Kerala flood  , this turned to be a relief for the farmers. Cardamom farming has faced severe blow during Kerala flood. The price hike is mainly due to North Indian traders becoming active prior to Diwali and also due to chances for low productivity in the upcoming rainy season.

It is first ever highest rate recorded in the history of Cardamom market price at the auction held at  Puttady Spices Park. Highest rate was set at Rs.2227 and average rate at Rs.1323. Around  831000 Kg of Cardamom has reached the auction centre in the last one week. On first week of August the highest rate was marked as Rs.1526 and Rs.963. The price is expected to rise in the coming days.

There is an increased demand from Guatemala Cardamom which is an inferior variety but requires no dangerous pesticides at the same time supreme quality can be produced only with the help of chemical pesticide usage.  Through chemical free farming, production of supreme quality cardamom has to be increased to get clutch in global market. Spices Board is working on this regards.

The rise in prise has led to local robbery. farm products are stolen in order to get profit in the scenario of price hike. Locals are requesting to enforce non bailable charges to curb this anti social activist.
