List of Pesticides Which are Banned or Restricted for Use in India
As the nation is shifting from conventional to organic farming, pesticide restriction or limitation has been a hot topic of discussion. Pesticide use in general is a chemical or biological substance that deters, incapacitates, or kills pests.
Pesticides are used so often that the term ‘pesticide’ is frequently used interchangeably with plant protection products. It is often used to eradicate or manage a wide range of agricultural pests that can harm crops and livestock while reducing farm output. Insecticides are used to kill insects, herbicides to kill weeds, rodenticides to kill rodents, and fungicides to manage fungus, mold, and mildew.
Recently the Indian government has publicly announced the usage of glyphosate, a commonly used weedicide, posing health hazards to humans and animals. However, usage is still limited and not prohibited.
The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare agreed to limit Glyphosate use by a notification titled 'Restriction on Glyphosate Use Order, 2022'.
This conclusion was made after reviewing the Expert Committee's findings and consulting with the Registration Committee, which was established under the Insecticides Act of 1968. The announcement refers to the Central government receiving a report from the Kerala government on the prohibition of glyphosate and its derivatives distribution sale and usage.
