Anyone can get affected by the covid-19 virus, yet experts have warned that being a diabetic can make you more at its risk. If you are a diabetic, then you can easily contract infectious diseases. According to data, people with underlying conditions of diabetes, heart disease & lung problems can develop more severe symptoms if they get coronavirus.

However, if you don’t have diabetes then also you should take proper care of yourself and follow all the precautions & guidelines of World Health Organisation (WHO) and the government.

Why diabetics are at high risk of getting COVID-19?

As per the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has proved to be more serious than the seasonal flu for diabetics. It indicates that people with the condition need to be more cautious. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that diabetes, smoking & other chronic conditions may increase the risk of severe illness from coronavirus.

Dr Behram Pardiwala, Internal Medicine Expert, Wockhardt Hospital, South Bombay said, “If people who are having diabetes fail to manage it, then they experience fluctuating blood sugars, and are also at the risk of other diabetes-related complications. Having heart disease or other complications along with diabetes can increase the chance of one getting ill from coronavirus. This is due to your body’s ability to fight off an infection is compromised.”

Thus, people having diabetes should take extra care of themselves.

How diabetics can stay safe from coronavirus?

Tips to stay safe from COVID-19 if you have diabetes:

1. Consult Doctor:

You must have an adequate stock of medication at home and other supplies for monitoring your blood sugar level. If there are fluctuations in blood sugar then immediately consult the doctor. Also, if you have symptoms like fever, cough, cold or breathlessness, then rush to your doctor.

2. Regular Monitoring:

You must check your blood sugar levels and temperature regularly. Keep a record of them and show them to your doctor when required.

3. Healthy Diet:

Drink lots of water. Eat fresh fruits & vegetables to boost immunity.

4. Self Isolation:

Social distancing & quarantine can reduce your risk of coronavirus. Go out of your house only when it’s absolutely necessary. Keep about six feet between you and others.

5. Keep a check on body fluctuations:

You must pay close attention to the changes occurring in the body as that can be a sign of infection.

6. Hand Hygiene:

Maintain good hand hygiene. Wash your hand properly with soap at regular intervals. Dry them with a disposable paper towel. Wash your hands before eating, cooking, after using the washroom, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.

7. Hand sanitizer:

Use them only when soap and water are not available. An alcohol-based hand sanitiser can help you get rid of germs & bacteria that are present on the hand. Don’t use scented hand sanitizers loaded with chemicals. Avoid overusing them as it can cause drying of the skin on your hands or may even result in cracking or bleeding.

8. Cover your mouth:

One must cover mouth while coughing & sneezing or wear a mask. Avoid coming in contact with those who have a cold or cough.
