As its name suggests, it looks like ginger but it altogether is a surprise when you taste it. This ginger looking spice from the family of plant of the ginger Zingiberaceae, is closely related to turmeric. The rhizomes are very similar to ginger but have a raw mango taste. Its known as Ambe Halad in Marathi, Aam Haldi in Hindi and Curcuma Amada (Mango Ginger) botanically, this plant from the ginger family is quite versatile.
If you have ever been invited to a South Indian meal, possibility is that you are going to be served with this perhaps in the form of pickle. Pickles in south India and chutneys in north india are made from Mango Ginger which gives your meal a different and mouth watering taste. The taxonomy of the species is a subject of some confusion as some authorities have considered the name C. mangga as identical while others describe it as a distinct species with C. mangga being found in southern India while C. amada is of east Indian origin. It is a seasonal plant and it’s often found in parts of Gujarat, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Himalayas, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in India.
