Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently shared some guidelines on how to keep packaged milk clean. Studies earlier have also concluded that the virus could stay up to 24 hours on cardboards and up to three days on plastic.

Milk is one of the essential food items in India. Many of us can't imagine beginning or ending our day without a tall glass of milk. It has nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, B vitamins, potassium and vitamin D plus, it's an excellent source of protein. Drinking milk and dairy products may prevent osteoporosis and bone fractures and even help you maintain a healthy weight.

Having said that, there have been a lot of different myths doing the rounds about whether or not packaged milk is safe for consumption. Whether milk should be boiled or not, how to properly handle milk packages etc. is something which has been on the minds of people for long.

Here are 5 major tips to keep packaged milk clean amid COVID-19:

  • The first thing to remember is to maintain a safe distance with the milkman, suggests FSSAI. One should check if the milkman is wearing a mask.
  • Secondly, once you receive the packet, wash it thoroughly with water.
  • Do not cut the packet immediately; let it dry off or the external surface water is likely to pour into the pan.
  • Before pouring the milk into the pan, wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Cut the milk packet, pour the milk into a pan and heat it to boil.

While the COVID-19 pandemic disrupts everyone’s daily lives, the dairy supply chain is also affected. The dairy sector has been recognized around the world as an essential activity. Dairy farmers and processors are working tirelessly to deliver nutritious food on our tables.
