In India, the month of October and November is generally considered to be one where people overeat a lot especially because the Diwali week with all the festivities usually occur together in these months, and a lot of people get to binge eat a lot of sweets in this time of the year.
And it’s this overload of sweets that proves very dangerous for us all. Especially for diabetics and prediabetics.
That is why it is very critical to start talking about the prediabetic levels more and spread awareness about what pre-diabetes is, what causes it, how to diagnose it, and what difficulties it might create. How to detect it, and most importantly, how to avoid it.
This is critical because, in India, diabetes is only discovered at a much later stage, when damage to bodily organs such as the kidneys and eyes has already occurred.
The main thing is that pre-diabetics can stop themselves from being diabetic if they take the right steps at the right time.
So what is Prediabetes?
Prediabetes is a health problem that actually is a very dangerous medical disease in which blood sugar levels are higher than usual but not yet high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. A person will have prediabetes if they have a blood glucose level between 140 and 199 mg/dL (7.8 to 11.0 mmol/L ) when measured 2 hours after consuming 75 grams of glucose.
The same elements that cause diabetes also cause pre-diabetes. The objective is to move your blood sugar out of the pre-diabetes zone.
So exercising and eating right is the only way to actually stop pre diabetes however the most important factor of prediabetes is that a person at this stage needs to keep getting tested to keep himself updated on whether he or she is still pre-diabetic or diabetic or it might actually evolve to type 2 diabetes levels without proper observation and restriction of diet compiled with exercise.
With World Diabetes Day coming up on the 14th of November it is our responsibility to understand the risk that diabetes as whole poses to our bodies and hence stop it at the prediabetes level before it becomes life-threatening.
