Kirloskar Brothers Limited, a heritage brand that has been serving the Indian agriculture industry with high quality pumps since more than hundred years, celebrates today birth anniversary of its leader Late Shri Shantanurao Laxmanrao Kirloskar.

Shri Shantanurao Laxmanrao Kirloskar was born on 28th May 1903 to Shri Laxmanrao Kirloskar, the founder of Kirloskar group. A true visionary, S.L Kirloskar played a vital role in the growth of Indian industry and agriculture in the 20th century. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US and was one of the first few Indians to graduate from MIT. At the end of the second World War, the Kirloskar group rose under the leadership of S.L. Kirloskar.

One of his widely-appreciated works include the development of diesel engine indigenously as an import substitute after India gained Independence. For him, economic preparedness was as important as military preparedness.

S.L. Kirloskar was also a Padma Bhushan recipient. He received his award in the year 1965 for his contribution to trade and industry. On 26 February 2003, the then Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee released a commemorative postage stamp marking the 100th anniversary of S. L. Kirloskar's birth.
