It was founded in 1972 with technical assistance from the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, and despite its bifurcation in 2006, the PDFA (Progressive Dairy Farmers Association) is still working for the welfare of farmers.

In 1990, a booklet called Dairy Sandesh was created to provide information to dairy farmers. In 2006, the leaflet was expanded into a full-fledged quarterly technical magazine called "Dairy Sandesh," which is sent free of charge to member farmers. The group hosts monthly workshops to bring farmers up to date on emerging technology. To give ready-to-use knowledge, PDFA produces technical publications on dairy production and animal nutrition.

Every year, it hosts the International Dairy Show and Exhibition to encourage farmers to retain high-quality cows and to bring scientists, corporations, and farmers together on a single platform. The association imports sperm from bovine bulls with high genetic potential from the United States.

Approximately 9000 Frozen Semen Doses (FSD) were obtained from CRI in 2008, while the association imported 12000 FSD from World Wide Sires Ltd. in the United States this year. Through a partnership with UCO Bank, the association also is known to provide low-interest loans to dairy producers. MILKFED Punjab has partnered with the farmers' organisation to give improved milk procurement pricing.
