The government of Tamil Nadu has recently launched a self-reliance program for women, announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in Chennai. This initiative, named "Kalaigar Mahalir Urimai Thittam," is primarily focused on enhancing the social welfare of women.
Under this program, eligible women in the state will receive monthly financial assistance of up to 1,000 rupees. The scheme aims to provide economic support to over one crore women in Tamil Nadu. The launch event occurred in Kanchipuram, where numerous empowered women received debit cards. Subsequently, the program will progressively expand to other districts, with each district's chief minister overseeing its implementation.
The Kalaigar Mahalir Urimai Thittam is a comprehensive women's empowerment program designed to economically empower eligible women, particularly those who are the primary breadwinners in their families and engaged in household responsibilities. The state government has allocated approximately 70,000 crores in the current fiscal budget for this scheme, making it the most significant social welfare initiative in the state. It is expected to benefit more than 1.6 crore women.
This program is open to women and transgender individuals who meet the eligibility criteria over a 21-year period. Notably, only individuals with an annual income of approximately 2.5 lakhs or less, as defined by the government, are eligible. All financial assistance under this program will be directly deposited into the beneficiaries' accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, as stated by the government.
