81 dead, 54 lakh affected, COVID-19 waste wash up in Assam floods raising fears of infection: Assam Floods

At least 81 have died and nearly 54lakh people have been affected by the deadly floods in 30 districts of Assam, said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). 649 relief camps have been established in the state according to the ASDMA report.

At least 81 have died and nearly 54lakh people have been affected by the deadly floods in 30 districts of Assam, said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). 649 relief camps have been established in the state according to the ASDMA report.

Besides, over 2.3lakh hectares of agricultural land have been flooded which led to 76,003 people evacuated from the inundated locations.

In the relief centers opened by the government, 47,465 people are taking shelter. A total of 181 boats have been deployed which evacuated 511 people till now. Additionally, 96 animals have been reported dead in the Kaziranga National Park.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday discussed about the floods situation with Assam Cheif Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on phone and assured all support required to the state.

“Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji took stock of the contemporary situation regarding #AssamFloods2020, #COVID19 and Baghjan Oil Well fire scenario over the phone this morning,” Mr. Sonowal tweeted.

“Expressing his concern & solidarity with the people, the PM assured all support to the state,” he added.

Unforntuanlye floodwaters spread have discarded medical waste from hospitals and  COVID centers rising infection fears among the inundated areas. ASDMA officials have expressed concerns about the discarded personal waste in floodwaters.

Complaints from locals in Chandrapur locality in Guwahati to ASDMA about the waste flowing into their compounds brought the issue in light.
