The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) extended the deadline last month for Aadhaar holders to update their details online free of cost until December 14, 2024. As the date approaches, residents are urged to update their information before the deadline. Initially, the free update service was offered for two months starting September 14, but the extension aims to encourage more residents to update their information for better service delivery and authentication.

UIDAI announced on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “UIDAI extends free online document upload facility till 14th December 2024; to benefit millions of Aadhaar Number Holders. This free service is available only on the myAadhaar portal.” The authority highlighted the importance of keeping Aadhaar documents up to date, especially for those who were issued their Aadhaar cards over a decade ago and have not updated them since.

Why Updating Aadhaar is Crucial

Residents are encouraged to update their Aadhaar details every 10 years. Updating ensures accurate authentication, enhances ease of living, and facilitates seamless service delivery. UIDAI has consistently promoted regular updates as a best practice, reiterating that updated information improves the functionality of Aadhaar as a reliable identification tool.

How to Update Aadhaar Online

The process to update Aadhaar details online is straightforward:

  1. Visit the myAadhaar portal.

  2. Log in using your Aadhaar number, captcha code, and OTP.

  3. Select the 'Document Update' option.

  4. Upload valid Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents, such as a voter ID, passport, or bank passbook.

  5. Submit the documents and note the Service Request Number (SRN) provided for tracking the status.

For those unable to use the online portal, Aadhaar centres and enrolment centres offer update services at a nominal fee of Rs 50. Biometric updates, such as changes to fingerprints, iris scans, or photographs, must also be done offline.

The free online update period will end on December 14, 2024, and there has been no confirmation about another extension. Residents are encouraged to act quickly to ensure their Aadhaar details are accurate and up to date.
