Adani Sets to Unveil India’s biggest Wind Turbine

The Adani group is preparing to build a 5.2 MW wind turbine prototype in Mundra, Gujarat. When it is completed, it will be the country's largest wind turbine and one of the largest on-shore machines in the world. The machine will be built with technology from W2E Wind to Energy GmbH of Germany.

While Adani has not responded to an email seeking confirmation, three sources close to the situation have informed that the machine will be manufactured by a company founded by the Adani family. Mundra will also house the manufacturing unit.

The plan is to build a prototype, test the machine, and then scale up production for self-consumption, domestic sales, and exports.

Onshore Wind Turbine

Wind turbines with capacities greater than 4 MW are typically associated with offshore installation, where machines as large as 14 MW have been installed. However, a 5.2 MW onshore turbine is unusual, and certainly not seen in India.

W2E Wind's 5.2 MW machine has blades that would describe a circle 165 metres in diameter and can sit on towers 140 metres in height. It can operate at wind speeds ranging from 3 m/s (very low) to 20 m/s, with 12 m/s producing the most power.

It is unclear which of Adani's companies will own the turbine. The group owns two renewable energy companies: Adani Green Energy Ltd and Adani New Industries Ltd, both of which are publicly traded.

Adani Green intends to build 45 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, which is three times the size of its current portfolio.

For some time, the Adani group has been attempting to enter the wind turbine manufacturing business, and has had discussions with the now-insolvent Regen Powertech, Inox, and Suzlon about a possible takeover.
