Agri Secy Urges India to Increase Maize Production by 10 million Tons in the Next 5 Years

The Indian government expects maize output to increase by 10 million tons (mt) over the next five years in order to meet the increased demand for ethanol production and the poultry industry.

Union Agriculture Secretary Manoj Ahuja underlined the importance of systematic loss reduction in the maize value chain at the India Maize Summit, which was held by FICCI. 

"At the moment, maize production is in the 33-34 mt range. We need a 44-45 mt increase in maize production over the next five years to meet the rising demand for ethanol and the poultry industry," Ahuja said. When agriculture is threatened by the effects of climate change, public and private partnerships should be prioritized, he said, because the potential for achieving the aim is considerable. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) hosted the 9th edition of the "India Maize Summit" on April 18, 2023, with the topic "Maize for India's Sustainable Agriculture Future." The summit aimed to explore the importance of maize production for domestic, industrial, and economic usage, as well as its environmentally benign cultivation. FICCI has been organizing the India Maize Summit since 2013, and the previous eight editions have been a success. The summit has always been praised for its effective involvement of stakeholders and discussion of timely issues.

Sunjay Vuppuluri, FASAR Segment, Yes Bank, Pravesh Sharma, Chairman FICCI Taskforce on FPOs and Director Samunnati, TR Kesavan, Chairman FICCI National Agriculture Committee and Group President, TAFE Ltd, and Anuja Kadian, Government and Industry Affairs Director, Asia Pacific, Corteva Agriscience were among those who attended the event.
