The United States agricultural sector has experienced back-to-back years of record exports, according to a recent announcement from the government. The Commerce Department released data earlier this week indicating that the U.S. agricultural exports reached $196 billion in 2022, a remarkable increase of 11% or $19.5 billion from the previous record set in 2021.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stated that the value of sales rose in all of the United States' top ten agricultural export markets, including China, Mexico, Canada, Japan, the European Union, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Colombia and Vietnam. Among these countries, record export sales were established in China, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines and Colombia.
Vilsack attributed the success of the agricultural sector to the Biden-Harris administration's efforts to create new and better markets for American agricultural producers and businesses. He emphasized the administration's continuous efforts to strengthen its relationships with trading partners while holding them accountable for their commitments. Vilsack also highlighted the role that infrastructure investments have played in strengthening the United States' supply chain, a critical aspect during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Agriculture Secretary also noted that the administration is working towards breaking down trade barriers that hinder U.S. producers' access to key markets, and investing in export market development programs. The department is also partnering with the industry to bring high-quality and cost-competitive U.S. products to consumers around the world.
According to the department, the top commodities exported by the United States in 2022 were soybeans, corn, beef, dairy, cotton, and tree nuts, which made up more than half of U.S. agricultural export value. Many U.S. products, including soybeans, cotton, dairy, beef, ethanol, poultry, soybean meal, distilled spirits, and distillers' grains, achieved record sales internationally.
The United States agricultural sector, with back-to-back years of record exports, recorded $160.5 billion in net farm income in 2022, as a result of the Biden-Harris administration's efforts to create better markets for American agricultural producers and businesses, and to break down trade barriers and strengthen relationships with trading partners.
