Agriculture World FB Live Series: Know How COVID-19 is Impacting Women in Rural Areas from Seema Kulkarni

While the whole globe including India is vehemently fighting against global pandemic COVID-19, the farmers, workers, daily wage earners are the one suffering the most. The nationwide lockdown has disrupted farmer’s daily livelihood and day to day picture of rural life to an unprecedented period. Although, the government has been taking every possible measure to decrease the plight of the sufferers, but the ground and grass root reality is still hidden from the mainstream light.

While the whole globe including India is vehemently fighting against global pandemic COVID-19, the farmers, workers, daily wage earners are the one suffering the most. The nationwide lockdown has disrupted farmer’s daily livelihood and day to day picture of rural life to an unprecedented period. Although, the government has been taking every possible measure to decrease the plight of the sufferers, but the ground and grass root reality is still hidden from the mainstream light.

To fill that gap and to show the real picture of ground reality in the gloomy times of lockdown, Agriculture World has come up with a campaign ‘Agriculture World Facebook Live Series’. In this series, we will introduce you to notable personalities from the field of agriculture to give you insight into the industry and the ground reality of farmer’s and rural life amid lockdown. 

In the second episode of this series, Agriculture World introduces you to Seema Kulkarni, the National Facilitation Team member of Mahila Kisan Adhikar Manch (MAKAAM) Forum for women farmers' rights and founding members of Society for Promoting Participative Eco-system Management, Pune (SOPPECOM).  Seema who has been vehemently working for women’s right will be highlighting on the rural women issues amid the COVID-19 global pandemic and its impact on rural women.

A little About Seema Kulkarni

Seema is one of the founding members of Society for Promoting Participative Eco-system Management, Pune (SOPPECOM) who holds MA degree in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.. She is presently a Senior Fellow in SOPPECOM, Pune and co-ordinates the gender and rural livelihoods activities within the organisation. She has co-ordinated various studies and programmes around decentralisation, gender and land, water and sanitation. She has published several articles/book chapters around issues of gender, water, sanitation and rural livelihoods. She has been associated with Stree Mukti Sangharsh Chalwal, the movement for the rights of Single women in Western Maharashtra, India and is involved in the Coalition of women's groups in Maharashtra, Stree Mukti Andolan Sampark Samiti.

She is currently the National Facilitation Team member of Mahila Kisan Adhikar Manch (MAKAAM) Forum for women farmers' rights, and anchoring the network at the Maharashtra level. The National secretariat for the network is also currently co-housed in SOPPECOM.
