And It always would be “KOLKATA KA ROSSOGOLLA”

The Spongy, White perfectly rounded ball, dipped in sugary syrup, melting in the mouth, is something hardly can ever resist. And when the tag of Kolkata adds up to the sweet, It becomes more special altogether. Bengalis are known for their love for Food, arts & literature and travelling. They are considered to be celebrating every little reason and occasion, and here they have got a new one, since the West Bengal’s famous “ ROSSOGOLLA” has got the GI tag.  The Geographical Indicator of India( GI tagged), has its typical taste, flavor and aroma which cannot be found anywhere else in the WORLD. The GI tag was primarily developed with the purpose of recognising the unique identity connecting different products and places.

The bitter face off of Odisha and West Bengal eventually came to an end after, The latter state got GI (Geographical Indication) tag for rosogolla. Both the states had been in arguments for a long time on the question of the sweet. While Bengal had been claiming that the delicacy was invented in Kolkata by confectioner Nobin Chandra Das in the 1860s, while on the other hand, Odisha government claimed it was invented in Puri in the 13th century.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, took her happiness to twitter by writing  “Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI... status for Rosogolla.”

Around 12 from 267 products which have received GI tags so far,  are from Bengal, including Darjeeling tea, Santiniketan leather goods, mango varieties such as Laxman Bhog, himsagar and fazli, Santipore saree, Baluchari saree, Dhaniakhali saree, Joynagarer moa and the more recent entrants —Bardhman Sitabhog and Bardhman Mihidana (both sweets). Other sweets which are GI tagged are Bandar Laddu from Andhra Pradesh and Bardhaman Sitabhog from West Bengal.
