Asia's Largest Tulip Garden in Srinagar Set to Mesmerize Visitors for 2024 Season

Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, home to the majestic mountain ranges and the iconic Dal Lake, is ready for the much-anticipated opening of Asia's largest Tulip Garden, also known as the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, on March 23, 2024. With an expected display of 1.7 million tulips, the upcoming tulip festival is set to attract throngs of both local and foreign tourists, eager to witness the breathtaking array of colors and hues that adorn the garden each year.

In an official statement released by Floriculture Commissioner Secretary Sheikh Fayaz Ahmad, it was revealed that the groundwork for this year's display has been completed, with an additional four kanals (0.5 acres) of land allocated for the parking lot to accommodate the influx of visitors. Moreover, the garden has expanded its variety, boasting a total of 73 different tulip varieties, including five new additions, to ensure a diverse and captivating experience for all visitors.

The Splendor of Kashmir's Tulips:

As the grip of winter begins to loosen, the gates of the tulip garden are poised to open, heralding the arrival of spring and the vibrant bloom of tulips. Typically, these blooms grace the garden for 15-20 days, from late March to mid-April, depending on the prevailing temperatures. However, the garden's allure extends beyond tulips, offering a sanctuary for an array of flower species such as daffodils, hyacinths, roses, ranunculi, muscaria, and Iris, contributing to a kaleidoscope of colors and fragrances.

While tulips are often associated with regions like Turkey and the Netherlands, Kashmir has emerged as a formidable contender in the realm of tulip cultivation. The region's affinity for tulips dates back centuries, with historical accounts recounting their cultivation on muddy rooftops before transitioning to kitchen gardens and flower beds, thereby cementing Kashmir's place among the world's premier tulip-growing destinations.
