Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has entered into a strategic partnership with NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad to enhance animal welfare efforts in India. This collaboration aims to provide high-quality legal training to individuals supporting District Societies for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCAs) and State Animal Welfare Boards. The initiative will particularly benefit applicants aspiring to become Honorary Animal Welfare Representatives (HAWRs).

Under this partnership, participants will undergo specialized training in animal welfare laws, investigative techniques, and related subjects. The training, organized in small batches of up to 25 participants, will span a minimum of three days. Successful candidates will receive HAWR certifications from AWBI, following evaluations conducted by NALSAR.

While the university retains intellectual property rights over the training materials, AWBI holds exclusive usage rights for the HAWR training program. This initiative signifies a major step forward in strengthening the legal framework for animal welfare across the country.

HAWRs are instrumental in addressing issues such as animal cruelty, injuries, inhumane treatment, and violations of transport laws. They also play a critical role in providing first aid, educating communities, and collaborating with local authorities to establish shelters and rescue operations.

Their dedication extends to combating cruel animal practices and leading initiatives during natural disasters. The efforts of these representatives significantly contribute to fostering a culture of compassion and responsible animal care, marking a transformative impact on animal welfare in India.

The AWBI also convened its 53rd General Meeting at the National Animal Resource Facility for Biomedical Research (NARFBR) in Hyderabad, addressing administrative and operational issues critical to advancing animal welfare.

In addition, the Board announced its plans to celebrate Animal Welfare Fortnight from January 14 to 30, 2025. This nationwide event will focus on the importance of biodiversity and the indispensable role animals play in maintaining ecological balance.
