Big Alert! Another Cyclone To Hit Andaman Sea; Know What IMD Predicts About Its Intensity & Direction

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that cyclonic circulation is emerging over the South Andaman Sea, which it is closely monitoring. It is, however, too early to forecast its direction and other minor aspects.

"We are carefully monitoring the possible formation of a cyclonic circulation in the South Andaman Sea on May 4, under the influence of which a low-pressure system is likely to develop over the area by May 6 and amplify further in the subsequent 24 hours," said Sanjib Bandopadhyay, deputy director-general of the Regional Meteorological Centre.

He went on to say that the meteorological department is keeping a close eye on the potential development, as well as its subsequent intensity and direction.

"It is too early to anticipate the trajectory of the system," Regional Meteorological Centre director G K Das told PTI, adding that because it is May and the system's development area is the Andaman Sea, there is a probability of the low pressure deepening, but that would be determined in one or two days.

Meanwhile, following a two-month drought, Kolkata and many districts in south Bengal received welcome rain on Saturday, with the Met Office forecasting further nor'westers in the region due to meteorological conditions.

The city's northern borders received 31.2 mm of rain from Saturday's nor'wester, while Kolkata's Alipore Regional Met Centre received 13.7 mm of rain.
