Corporates Partners commit to UQ’s Australia-First Carbon Literacy Program

The University of Queensland is helping major organizations address climate change after PwC and Boeing became the first employers in Australia to provide their workforce with the University’s accredited Carbon Literacy training.

PwC Australia and Boeing Australia employees completed UQ Business School's Carbon Literacy Program, the country's first accredited training for corporate organizations.

Dr. Cle-Anne Gabriel, former Program Co-Lead and Director for the United Nations (UN) Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) for the UQ Business School, stated that addressing the climate crisis through education was a strategic imperative for large organizations.

"Carbon Literacy is poised to become a sought-after micro-credential across industries, particularly for people who do not normally engage with climate issues in their day-to-day work lives."

Following completion of the live online short course, employees took a pledge and assessment to become Carbon Literate through the Carbon Literacy Project – a global not-for-profit organization specializing in climate-action training that has certified over 26,000 people worldwide.

Building individual and collective climate knowledge are important for PwC's people, clients, and communities, according to PwC Australia Social Impact Director Louise Halliwell.

"We all have a role to play in reducing emissions, and the UQ Carbon Literacy Program helps make that a reality," she said.

"We were thrilled to offer this opportunity to our employees, who are now carbon literate champions for climate action across our organization."

"This training reinforces our firm's commitment to environmental sustainability and will assist us in meeting our worldwide science-based commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030."

Heidi Hauf, Boeing's Regional Sustainability Lead for Australia and New Zealand, stated that providing employees with a holistic Carbon Literacy across business units was critical in assisting Boeing Australia in meeting its long-term sustainability goals.

"The Program also builds on our long history of collaboration with UQ, developing technologies and innovations that advance Boeing's sustainable aerospace engineering and manufacturing."
