“Crop Colonies Must Be Developed to Make Agriculture Sustainable,” Says S Niranjan Reddy
Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy emphasized the importance of encouraging crop colony development across the country in order to make agriculture sustainable and profitable for farmers.
Reddy spoke at an international seminar on "Developing Value Chains in Agriculture" at the inaugural session of VAIGA-2023 (Value Chain Development in Agriculture) in Thiruvananthapuram. He stated that agricultural reforms will not only increase farmer income but will also attract young people to the age-old profession.
He emphasised the importance of developing a strong marketing system and establishing food processing industries to add value to crops.
According to Niranjan Reddy, different soils and climatic conditions in India have a significant impact on the crops grown there. As a result, he emphasised the importance of dividing and developing crop colonies based on the crops grown in each state in order to create a support system.
"Food cannot be substituted. As a result, the Telangana government is prioritizing agriculture and farmers by instituting new reforms and encouraging crop diversification to meet the dynamic market demands," he said.
Given the increased consumption of millets as a result of changing food consumption patterns, he proposed increasing production and promoting food processing industries. "There is a need not only to improve productivity and production, but also to add value to farm produce in order to export it and help farmers earn more money," he added.
On the occasion, Niranajan Reddy stated that agriculture was critical to Telangana's inclusive growth and planned social and economic development.
According to recent estimates, agriculture contributes a healthy 18.2 percent to the GSDP (gross state domestic product) with 1.5 crore acres or 51 percent of the State's land and 65 lakh farmers. He stated that Telangana's soils were suitable for a variety of crops and seed production.
