In a joint effort to commemorate the International Year of Millets, CSIR - National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) and the Knowledge and Awareness Mapping Platform (KAMP) recently conducted a knowledge-sharing session.

This event celebrated India's successful proposal to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for the observance of 2023 as the International Year of Millets. The session was designed to enlighten students about the vital role millets play in agriculture, nutrition, and sustainable development.

The event was skillfully hosted by Aniket Arora, Outreach Coordinator at KAMP. Dr. Charu Lata, Principal Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR, addressed an audience of more than 500 students ranging from classes 5th to 12th, representing various regions of India. The workshop's objective was to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of millets, spanning their definition, historical significance in India, various types, manifold benefits, and versatile applications.

During this enlightening workshop, Dr. Charu Lata provided an extensive exploration of millets. She offered insights into the historical, cultural, nutritional, and sustainable aspects of these grains, fostering a deeper appreciation for their importance.

The event not only expanded students' knowledge but also inspired them to incorporate millets into the food and agriculture landscape. The workshop served as a valuable educational platform for promoting the International Year of Millets and advocating for the sustainable utilization of these grains in the 21st century. Aniket Arora also took the opportunity to inform the students and teachers about the upcoming Scientific Excursions and Teacher Training programs organized by KAMP at various CSIR Labs and ISRO Centres scheduled for this year.
