Cyclone Dana Approaches Paradip Port, Authorities Ramp Up Safety Measures

Cyclone "Dana" is approaching Paradip Port, expected to make landfall on October 24-25, 2024. In response, authorities have implemented extensive precautionary measures to ensure safety and minimize disruptions. Warnings from the India Meteorological Department have prompted swift actions to protect both assets and personnel at this crucial Indian port.

In preparation for the cyclone’s severe weather conditions, the Paradip Port Authority has ramped up operations. All cargo transportation and loading activities are being expedited to secure goods and equipment ahead of the storm. Ships docked at the port have been ordered to relocate to safer anchorage points at sea, reducing the risk of accidents from turbulent waters. This proactive approach aims to minimize potential damage and ensure the port's resilience during the cyclone.

The welfare of port workers and local communities is a top priority. Paradip Port Authority has stocked up on essential supplies, including medicines, food, and drinking water, to cater to emergency needs. Evacuation buses have been arranged to transport residents from vulnerable areas to safety. Additionally, equipment like power saws has been prepared for rapid debris removal to maintain access routes and aid distribution after the cyclone’s impact.

To further protect displaced residents, several cyclone shelters have been set up. These shelters are equipped to offer a safe space for individuals until it is safe for them to return home. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways is overseeing the situation, working closely with port authorities to ensure the safety of all stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways has been actively preparing to minimize disruptions. A high-level meeting, chaired by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, reviewed contingency plans. The East Coast and South Eastern Railways have established dedicated war rooms at key locations to coordinate swift responses. Satellite phones and backup power systems ensure continuous communication, while specialized teams stand ready to restore tracks, signaling, and electrification if damaged.

Railway authorities have deployed more than 600 staff across strategic locations and readied heavy machinery for potential emergencies. Trains will be controlled based on the severity of wind conditions, with several trains already canceled or rerouted. Help desks and medical teams are in place at key stations to assist stranded passengers, while provisions like food and water have been stocked for those who may be affected by service delays.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has also launched preventive measures. ICG ships, aircraft, and remote stations in West Bengal and Odisha are broadcasting weather warnings to fishing vessels, advising them to return to shore. The ICG is on high alert, prepared to provide rescue and relief operations in coordination with local disaster management authorities.
