Delhi Records Highest Temperature of the Year Amidst Widespread Heatwave Across India

Delhi, the bustling capital city of India, sweltered under scorching heat on May 5, 2024, as it marked the hottest day of the year so far, with 41 degrees Celsius as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), surpassing the previous high set on April 27, 2024, when the maximum temperature peaked at 40.5 degrees Celsius.

The continuous heatwave gripping Delhi is part of a broader pattern of soaring temperatures across various states in India. From Telangana to Tamil Nadu, and from Maharashtra to West Bengal, regions experienced temperatures ranging from 42 to 45 degrees Celsius, significantly surpassing average levels. In some areas, temperatures are 4-7 degrees Celsius above normal, raising concerns about the impact on human health and agricultural productivity.

The IMD highlighted that the prevailing temperatures are quite concerning, indicative of the escalating impact of climate change. Global warming is causing severe heatwaves, triggering water shortages, affecting agricultural yields, and posing severe health risks, especially in densely populated regions like Delhi.
