Depression Over Bay of Bengal; Heavy Rain Likely Over Southeast Peninsular India

A low pressure area has formed over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea this morning, November 17th, 2022, as a result of yesterday's cyclonic circulation over the south Andaman Sea and its surroundings in lower and middle tropospheric levels.

Heavy rainfall in isolated locations is very likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

It is expected to move west northwestwards and gradually consolidate into a Depression over the central parts of the South Bay of Bengal on November 19th, 2022. It is expected to move west-northwestwards towards the coasts of Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh over the next three days. 

Heavy Rainfall & Wind Warning:

On November 17, 2022, widespread rainfall with heavy falls in isolated locations is very likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On the 17th and 18th of November, 2022, strong surface winds (up to 30-40 kmph with gusts up to 50 kmph) are expected to prevail over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls is expected over Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on the 20th and 21st of November, 2022, and over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh on the 21st of November, 2022.

As the system approaches the Indian mainland, it will begin to affect the southern states later this week. As a result, isolated heavy rains (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) are expected over Tamil Nadu on Sunday and Monday (November 20-21) and Andhra Pradesh the following Monday. The rainy weather is expected to continue into next week.

Fishermen Warning:

Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is expected to prevail over the Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast & Eastcentral Bay of Bengal on the 17th; over the Southeast Bay of Bengal adjoining the Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of Southwest & Eastcentral Bay of Bengal on the 18th.

Southwest and adjoining Southeast & Westcentral Bay of Bengal and along & off the Sri Lanka coast on the 19th; From the 20th to the 22nd of November, 2022, the Puducherry-Sri Lanka coast will be open.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the Andaman Sea and the adjoining Southeast and Eastcentral Bays of Bengal on the 17th; into the Southeast Bay of Bengal adjoining the Andaman Sea and the adjoining areas of the Southwest and Eastcentral Bays of Bengal on the 18th.

Southwest and adjoining Southeast & Westcentral Bay of Bengal, as well as along & off the Sri Lanka coast on November 19th; Southwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal, as well as along & off the south Andhra Pradesh-Tamilnadu-Puducherry-Sri Lanka coasts from November 20th to the forenoon of November 22nd, 2022.
