The Department of Agriculture releases Final and First Advance Estimates indicating growth in horticultural production for 2022-23 and 2023-24.

The Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has recently released the Final Estimates for 2022-23 and the First Advance Estimates for 2023-24 concerning the area and production of various horticultural crops. These estimations are based on data collected from States/UTs and other governmental sources.

Highlights of 2022-23 (Final Estimates)

The horticultural production for 2022-23 (Final Estimates) is projected to be approximately 355.48 Million Tonnes, marking an increase of about 8.30 Million Tonnes (2.39%) compared to the previous year. This growth is accompanied by a 1.41% increase in area, equating to 0.40 Million Ha.

Fruit Production: Fruit production is estimated at 110.21 Million Tonnes, with significant increases seen in the production of Apple, Banana, Grapes, Mango, and Watermelon.

Vegetable Production: Vegetable production has risen from 209.14 Million Tonnes in 2021-22 to 212.55 Million Tonnes in 2022-23. This growth is attributed to increases across all vegetables except Chillies (Green), Onion, Radish, Tapioca, and Tomato.

  • Onion: Production is estimated at 302.08 Lakh Tonnes compared to 316.87 Lakh Tonnes in the previous year.

  • Potato: Production is estimated at 601.42 Lakh Tonne, compared to 561.76 Lakh Tonne in the previous year.

  • Tomato: Production is estimated at 204.25 Lakh Tonne, compared to 206.94 Lakh Tonne in the previous year.

Highlights of 2023-24 (First Advance Estimates)

The horticultural production for 2023-24 (First Advance Estimates) is anticipated to be about 355.25 Million Tonnes, with a 1.15% increase in area compared to the final estimates of the previous year.

Fruit Production: Fruit production is expected to reach 112.08 Million Tonnes, primarily driven by increases in Banana, Mandarin, and Mango production.

Vegetable Production: Vegetable production is forecasted to be around 209.39 Million Tonnes, with increases expected in Cabbage, Cauliflower, Pumpkin, Tapioca, Tomato, and Other Vegetables.

  • Tomato: Production is expected to be around 208.19 Lakh Tonnes, reflecting a 1.93% increase compared to the previous year.

  • Onion: Production is expected to be around 254.73 Lakh Tonnes, a decrease from the previous year, attributed to declines in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

  • Potato: Production is expected to be around 589.94 Lakh Tonnes, a decrease attributed to West Bengal compared to the previous year.

These estimates provide insights into the dynamic nature of horticultural crop production in India, reflecting both growth and challenges faced by various crops across different regions.
