Dr Himanshu Pathak Encourages Scientific Farming Practices and Entrepreneurship in Andaman Islands

Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR), met with progressive farmers in Rangat, North & Middle Andaman on May 6, 2024. These farmers not only making profits but also provide employment to local people.

During his visit, Dr. Pathak passionately advocated for the adoption of scientific farming techniques, stressing the importance of nurturing agricultural entrepreneurs across the country. He underscored that farmers serve as exemplary figures within their communities, showcasing the benefits of scientific cultivation methods.

During the visit, Dr. Pathak engaged with progressive farmers like Nirmal Sammadhar of Nimbutala village, who has implemented a pond-based farming system encompassing paddy, vegetables, poultry, and duckery. Sammadhar's innovative approach not only creates employment opportunities but also yields a substantial net income of Rs. 11 to 12 lakhs annually. He receives crucial training and technical support from ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nimbudera. Training and technical assistance are offered in fish breeding, scientific management, high-yielding vegetable and more by ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra

Similarly, K. Muniyandi of Janakpur village showcased a plantation-based cropping system, incorporating fruits and backyard poultry. With assistance from ICAR-KVK, Nimbudera, Muniyandi has achieved commendable success, earning approximately Rs. 2.4 lakhs from his 450 to 500 fruit-bearing areca nut plants.

Dr. Pradip Dey, Director of ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata, highlighted the importance of collaboration with local government bodies to foster sustainable agriculture practices. Additionally, Dr. V.B. Patel, Assistant Director General (Fruits & Plantation Crops), advocated for the integration of spices as intercrops to enhance farmers' incomes.

Furthermore, Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director of ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair, reaffirmed the institute's dedication to enhancing farmers' productivity.

The visit also witnessed the active participation of officials and staff from ICAR-KVK, underscoring the collaborative effort towards promoting sustainable and profitable agricultural practices in the Andaman Islands.
