Dr. Keki Hormusji Gharda, a prominent Indian chemical engineer, chemist, and visionary entrepreneur, passed away today, September 30, 2024. Born on September 25, 1929, Dr. Gharda was the founder, chairman, and managing director of Gharda Chemicals Limited, a research-driven company specializing in agrochemicals, polymers, and high-performance pigments.

Dr. Gharda's innovations transformed India’s chemical industry by reducing the nation’s dependence on imported chemicals and dyes. He developed cost-effective, indigenous alternatives that had a profound impact on India’s agricultural sector. His innovative solutions enhanced the productivity of Indian farmers and drove growth in the agrochemical industry.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to science, technology, and industry, Dr. Gharda was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2016. His influence extended beyond the chemical industry; he was deeply committed to philanthropy, using his success to uplift others and promote education and scientific research.

Among his many awards, Dr. Gharda received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, given by the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture, in association with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, and the Ministry of Commerce. He was also recognized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) with the FICCI Award for Research and Technology for his pioneering work on the development and commercialization of Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK), a high-performance polymer used in advanced engineering applications.

Dr Keki Gharda leaves behind a legacy of innovation, philanthropy, and a lasting impact on India’s chemical and agricultural sectors. He will be remembered as a visionary whose contributions helped shape modern India’s industrial sector.
