Farmers Beware - 25 Percent Pesticides sold in Market are Spurious

Indian Agriculture is facing a critical challenge of maintaining food and nutrition security for the burgeoning population. The goal of food security can be achieved by increasing the farm yield considerably and hence crop protection chemicals play important role. According to the United Nations Study on global population trends predicts that India will surpass China to become the most populous nation in the world by 2022. As per the requirement, there is a need to increase the total yield of food grains in India, which is possible only with the crop protection Chemicals to protect the growth of the Plants and Crops. 

The Branded products from the multinational companies are making huge profit. The small and local manufacturers indulge themselves in manufacture of the substandard pesticides, which are basically spurious pesticides, which attract huge profit. 

One of the key challenges faced by both farmers and agrochemical industry is the presence of counterfeit/spurious pesticides. Such products not only pose threats to farm yield, farmers’ health but also have severe economic implications. The Agrochemicals sector has huge unrealized potential for growth, given the presently very low level of application as compared to global norms.  

About 25 percent pesticides samples sold in open market are substandard and losses on account of use of such spurious products   are estimated at Rs 30,000 crore to the farming community, farmers' body Bharatiya Krishak Samaj  informed. 

As per the farmers' body, BKS, 13 out of total 50 samples of pesticides sold in open market have been found to be substandard in a test conducted at a Government Lab. 

Bharatiya Krishak Samaj, President Krishana Bir Chaudhary alleged that pesticides inspectors and lab analysts at the state level, connive with the manufacturers for sale of such substandard and spurious products.  He emphasized for strict action against them.
