Father of Indian Green Revolution turns : 93

Father of Indian Green Revolution, Dr. M S Swaminathan turned 93 on August 7, 2018. He is the man behind introducing various high yielding varieties in the country which helped in the emancipation of Indian farmers and raised the standard of Indian economy by making the country self sufficient in food. Krishi Jagran team celebrated the diginatry's birthday at Delhi Headquarters with a small cake cutting ceremony followed by speech from Editor in chief.

Krishi Jagran is pleased to wish Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan, aka Dr. Swaminathan hearty congratulations on his 93 rd Birthday. Born on 7 August 1925, he is an international administrator, pioneer in Indian genetics and known as Father of Indian green revolution. Renowned for his leading role in India's Green Revolution a program under which high-yield varieties of wheat and rice seedlings were planted in the fields of poor farmers. He is the founder and chairman of the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation where he is currently working.

His vision is to rid the world of hunger and poverty. Swaminathan is an advocate of moving India to sustainable development, especially using environmentally sustainable agriculture, sustainable food security and the preservation of biodiversity, which he calls an "evergreen revolution.”

 

Krishi Jagran team celebrated the birthday of the dignitary by cheer and pompous. Accolading Dr. Swaminathan Mr. M C Dominic, Editor in chief  says , “ Dr. Swaminathan is a man who has inspired the whole of world. He scarified many things to pursue the well being of the Indian farmer and farming altogether, Swaminathan has taken the courage to change the Indian farming. He inspires Krishi Jagran team to work for the welfare for all and for the eradication of poverty and hunger. We pledge to fulfill that dream.”

 

 

From 1972 to 1979 he was director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. He was Principal Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture from 1979 to 1980. He served as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute(1982–88) and became president of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in 1988.

 

Few of the awards received by Dr. Swaminathan are : World Food Prize 1987, Padma Bhushan, Indira Gandhi Prize 1999, Padma Shri, Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration 2013, Albert Einstein World Award of Science 1986, Padma Vibhushan, Ramon Magsaysay Award, Four Freedoms Award, CNN-IBN Indian of the Year Lifetime Achievement 2010.
