Former CJI's Son, DY Chandrachud Takes Oath as 50th Chief Justice of India

President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office of new CJI, Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Wednesday, as he took over as the 50th Chief Justice of India. The latter is a successor to Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and will have a tenure of two years.

Justice Chandrachud took over the office of CJI nearly 44 years after his father YV Chandrachud held the position. YV Chandrachud, who was appointed as CJI in the year 1978 and ended his tenure in 1985 is the longest serving chief justice till date (his serving period lasted for seven years).

The latter is remembered for granting prison time to late Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi in a case involving a Hindi language movie called 'Kissa Kursi Ka'. The film was banned by the Indian state during the Emergency in 1975 as it is believed to be a satire on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi.

Justice Chandrachud completed his graduation from St Stephen's College in Delhi and then went to Delhi’s Law Campus Centre to pursue a degree in law. He was honoured with two advance degrees in the field from Harvard University, and at the age of 39, he become one of the youngest senior advocates in the country.
