GADVASU Celebrated “World Ozone Day” & Discussed Solutions for Depletion of Ozone Layer

World Ozone Day 2021

World Ozone Day was celebrated at the Centre for One Health, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. The event was held under the ICAR- Institutional Development Plan-National Agricultural Higher Education Project (IDP-NAHEP).

An expert talk was given by Dr. Lakhvir Kaur Dhaliwal, Professor, Agricultural Meteorology, Department of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Dr. Randhir Singh, co-organizing secretary and Professor, Centre for One Health welcomed and introduced Dr. Lakhvir Kaur Dhaliwal to the audience.

Factors Responsible for Depletion of Ozone Layer

Dr. Dhaliwal talked on the topic entitled “Depletion and protection of Ozone Layer”. Dr. Dhaliwal discussed the different factors responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer. Dr. Dhaliwal said that several human activities could be responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer. She mentioned that in addition to its effect on the environment, UV rays are also harmful to marine life.

Solution to Depletion of Ozone Layer

She discussed the solution to ozone layer depletion, for example, avoid using Ozone Depleting Substances e.g., chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), etc., minimize the use of vehicles, use of eco-friendly cleaning products, prohibition the use of nitrous oxide, etc. More than 90 participants including students and faculty joined this event. There was a question-answer session also, and Dr. Dhaliwal answered the queries asked by the students and faculty.

Dr. Jasbir Bedi, Director, Centre for One Health mentioned that such events are a very good platform for the students and faculty to avail the recent knowledge about the issues related to human, animal, and environmental health.

Dr. S.P.S Ghuman, Principal Investigator -IDP and Dean, College of Veterinary Science appreciated the efforts of the faculty, Centre for One Health, and congratulated the organizing team. Dr. Rajnish Sharma, co-organizing secretary extended the vote of thanks to the speaker, students, and faculty for joining this event.
