Ministry of Road Transport and Highway has decided to modify the format of DRIVING LICENSE to SMART CARD.

Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari said in Rajya Sabha that his ministry has prescribed a common format and design of the Driving License for the entire country. He said that after the 1st of October 2019, the driving license (Driving card) and registration certificate (Registration card) issued in the entire country will be made equal. Further, he told that driving license and a registration certificate will be valid in e-form, which means people will not have to carry hard copy of driving license and registration certificate in case they have an electronic license in Parivahan.

As many people in the country have more than one driving license hence to reduce the weight of their wallet, the government came up with this idea and almost 15 crore driving license records are available in central repository. The SARATHI application has the feature to recognize duplicate records.

How will be the New Driving License & Registration Certificate?

The government said that the new driving license (Driving card) will be non-chip Microchip, which will include features like Quick Response (QR) code and near field communication (NFC) i.e Technology used in Debit and credit cards.

If we talk of registration certificate it will be paperless and in the form of a card, in which the name of the owner with other details will be printed in the front. According to the Center's online database, the complete record about the driver or vehicle will be available on a device through this QR code. The color of the driving license and RC will also be changed to the same color. The new format will be implemented by the central government across the country from October 1, 2019

As this format would be launched after 1st of October 2019 so don't forget to update your driving license!!!
