Govt. Commits to Enhancing India's Competitiveness in Green Hydrogen Export Market, Says R K Singh

Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, R K Singh, convened a significant meeting in New Delhi on Thursday, October 19, 2023, to address the concerns of Green Hydrogen Developers and Industry Associations and discuss how the government can assist in overcoming challenges.

Mr Singh, while addressing the gathering, expressed the Ministry of Power and Ministry of New & Renewable Energy's commitment to facilitate a more business-friendly environment for Hydrogen Developers. He emphasized that India, with its unified grid and substantial renewable energy capacity, is poised to become a global leader in the production of cost-effective Green Hydrogen. The Minister pledged to harness the nation's potential and meet the targets set forth in the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).

During the meeting, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy presented a comprehensive overview of the pertinent issues. It was highlighted that producing 1 million metric tonnes of Hydrogen would require 25 GW of Renewable Power, while the production of 1 million metric tonnes of Green Ammonia would necessitate 5 GW of Renewable Power.

Industry representatives were urged to share information about the locations of their forthcoming Green Hydrogen/Ammonia plants and the corresponding withdrawal capacity requirements. This information will aid in the strategic planning of essential transmission infrastructure.

Subsequently, industry stakeholders voiced various challenges they currently face, including concerns related to Special Economic Zone (SEZ) policies, regulatory provisions for dual connectivity, specific contractual conditions, state-imposed demand charges, and other cost-related issues pertaining to Green Hydrogen production in India. They called for timely resolutions to enable the production and supply of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives at globally competitive prices.

R K Singh assured the industry that their concerns would be thoroughly examined, and the government is committed to resolving outstanding issues as swiftly as possible. He stressed that India is dedicated to becoming a competitive player in the global Green Hydrogen and its derivatives export sector. The Minister also emphasized that Grid Security would not be compromised while ensuring the competitiveness of green hydrogen production.

About National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM)

Launched in January 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) boasts a total outlay of Rs 19,744 crores. The mission's primary objective is to produce 5 million tonnes of Green Hydrogen annually by 2030, accompanied by the addition of 125 GW of renewable energy capacity.
