Heavy Rain Alert for TN from April 30 to May 3; These Districts on Alert!

For the next four days- from Sunday to next Wednesday, April 30 to May 3- the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds blowing at 40-50 kmph over Tamil Nadu.

Heavy rains (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) are expected in isolated regions of the state throughout the same five-day timeframe. Given the unpredictability of the weather forecast, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for the whole state of Tamil Nadu. Residents are urged to 'be aware' of the local meteorological situation, according to the advisory.

Throughout the state, heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for the following districts during this forecast period:

• April 30: Coimbatore, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris, Tenkasi, Theni and Thirunelveli

• May 1: Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Karur, Madurai, Nilgiris, Salem, Tenkasi, Theni, Thirunelveli, Thiruppur and Virudhunagar

• May 2: Coimbatore, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Then, Thiruppuri and Virudhunagar

• May 3: Coimbatore, Dindigul, Namakkal, Nilgiris and Salem

Chennai will have rain and thunderstorms for the following three days, followed by gloomy conditions in the middle of next week. This wet stretch will be prompted by a north-to-south directed trough going through interior South India, according to The IMD.

These troughs are essentially elongated zones of low pressure, and their existence attracts moisture and causes instability in the atmosphere, resulting in the production of rain clouds. During this time period, these weather elements will keep statewide daytime temperatures normal or slightly below normal.

Meanwhile, this rainy weekend appears to be on track to ensure that Tamil Nadu ends April with above-average monthly rainfall. Between April 1 and April 28, the southern state received 37.9 mm of precipitation, which is about 5% more than the average for this time period (36.2 mm).
