Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, has signed a crucial R&D collaboration agreement with Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) to bring innovative probiotic health products to market. These probiotics, derived from traditional fermented foods of Northeast India, have demonstrated significant potential in addressing metabolic diseases, enhancing gut health, and promoting healthy ageing, according to IASST's research.

The collaboration, supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), was recognized as a milestone by Professor Abhay Karandikar, the Secretary of DST. He highlighted that this partnership aligns with the broader goal of promoting the bioeconomy of Northeast India by utilizing its rich biodiversity. Karandikar expressed confidence in Bharat Biotech’s global expertise in biopharmaceuticals, stating that the company's involvement will aid in the commercialisation of these innovative technologies developed by IASST.

The agreement was formalized by IASST’s Director, Prof. Ashis Mukherjee, and BBIL’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Krishna Ella, along with Dr. Yogeshwar Rao from BBIL. Prof. Mukherjee highlighted the significance of this collaboration, pointing out that it offers an opportunity to turn academic research into commercially viable products. Bharat Biotech will be instrumental in conducting the pre-clinical and clinical trials to ensure the probiotics meet regulatory standards and reach the market.

Under this agreement, IASST will lead the research efforts, while Bharat Biotech will focus on the commercialisation process. A dedicated monitoring committee, consisting of representatives from all parties involved, will oversee the progress of the project to ensure timely completion of milestones. Additionally, IASST will receive royalties from the sale of products generated through this collaboration.

The probiotic products, rooted in traditional knowledge, are expected to offer natural solutions to lifestyle diseases like diabetes and obesity. Both IASST and Bharat Biotech expressed optimism about the future, envisioning these scientific innovations impacting global health and wellness while contributing to India's growing biotechnology sector.

This collaboration exemplifies the integration of traditional knowledge with cutting-edge science, advancing health innovation in India.
