IIIT-Bhagalpur & BAU Collaborate to Develop 'e-Nirog' App for Crop Disease Detection
Unlike the traditional approach of detecting plant/crop illnesses, which involves physical observation of disease symptoms on plant parts, the e-Nirog app use Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The Indian Institute of Information Technology at Bhagalpur (IIIT-Bhagalpur) and Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) worked together to create an innovative mobile app for farmers' benefit, with the aim of detecting agricultural diseases and related problems and finding solutions. It has been named the 'e-Nirog' mobile app.
Farmers may detect plant/crop diseases and discover solutions using the e-Nirog app on their mobile phones. The AI-powered software can also detect soil and crop health, as well as provide fertilizer and nutrient recommendations, monitor weather, and so on, allowing farmers to make better decisions and farm more efficiently.
Prof Arvind Choubey, director of IIIT-Bhagalpur, said agriculture plays a critical part in a country's development as well as improving farmers' socioeconomic conditions.
Crop/plant diseases, on the other hand, can ruin entire crops, resulting in food scarcity, hunger, and other difficulties. The AI-powered e-Nirog app promises to be crucial in crop/plant disease identification.
Prof Choubey stated that the app was planned and built for farmers by IIIT-B in accordance with BAU criteria as part of the climate-friendly farming plan to solve a wide range of agricultural challenges.
Prof Choubey elaborated on the e-Nirog app, saying farmers must install the software on their mobile phones and register their details, then take images using their phones' cameras and input details of the crop/plant and diseases/problems through the app for results.
The crop/plant disease and its treatments will be quickly transmitted to farmers via WhatsApp, according to the IIIT-B director. BAU VC D R Singh stated that agriculture is critical for feeding people and cattle.
The e-Nirog app assists in rapidly diagnosing crop/plant ailments and locating their treatments, allowing proper pesticides/chemicals to be administered to stop the diseases and boost agricultural production, hence improving farmers' social and economic conditions.
