IMD Issues Severe Heatwave Warning for These States; Details Inside

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on 5 May (Thursday) that a new heatwave is likely to begin on 7 and 8 May 2022, in the northwest and central India.

Weather Forecast for Next 4 Days

The Met Department in its recent advisory stated that heatwave conditions will be prevalent over central Maharashtra and will persist throughout Rajasthan between May 7 and 9. The heatwave will continue on May 8 and 9 across south Haryana, southwest Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha (in Maharashtra), and Delhi.

Rainfall is Prevalent in These States

According to the IMD advisory, isolated rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and west Rajasthan later on Thursday.

The announcement comes a day after rain and hailstorm hit numerous parts of north and central India, including Delhi. Winds gusting up to 50 km/h were reported in the country's capital, forcing at least three planes to be diverted to Jaipur, Rajasthan. Rain, gusts, and thunderstorm-hailstorm activity caused many other aircraft to be delayed.

Meanwhile, while India's north, northwest, and central regions brace for another round of scorching heat, the country's southern and eastern regions are expected to get significant rain.

Extremely Heavy Rain Likely in Andaman and Nicobar Islands 

On May 6, the Met Department predicted the creation of a low-pressure region over the South Andaman Sea, which would develop into a depression during the next 48 hours and move northwestwards. As a result, severe rain is forecast in isolated areas over the Nicobar Island on Thursday, and extremely heavy rain is expected throughout the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 6 and 8.

A trough or wind discontinuity is currently forming across peninsular India, bringing heavy rain to southern Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Karaikal (in Puducherry), and Mahe (in Kerala) today. Coastal and north interior Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh have all been issued a similar weather alert until May 10.

Advisory for Fishermen

Due to the increasing depression, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the Andaman Sea for the next five days. It has also instructed them not to enter into the Bay of Bengal's southeast and east-central regions till May 9, and into the water body's west-central region on May 8 and 9.
