India and Saskatchewan Strengthen Agricultural Ties for Global Food Security

Shobha Karandlaje, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, made a noteworthy diplomatic step by holding a productive conversation with Scott Moe, the Premier of Saskatchewan Province, Canada. The meeting, held at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi on February 21. It focused on reinforcing the enduring trade relationship between Saskatchewan and India, particularly in the realms of pulses, potash, agricultural technologies, and research collaborations.
Trade Relations for Energy and Food Security
MoS Shobha Karandlaje underscored the vital role of the trade relations between India and Saskatchewan in ensuring the nation's energy and food security. Saskatchewan, she highlighted, stands out as a consistent and reliable supplier of essential commodities such as uranium, potash, lentils, peas, chickpeas, and semi-chemical wood pulp products. Notably, Saskatchewan has emerged as one of the principal sources of pulse imports for India. The minister expressed a keen interest in expanding cooperation in biotechnology, agri-tech, and wastewater treatment. Additionally, she proposed enhancing knowledge exchange and technology transfer through regular Technical Group meetings, specifically focusing on sustainable agriculture.
Strengthening Agricultural Collaboration
H.E. Mr. Scott Moe reciprocated the sentiment, acknowledging the strengthening of India-Saskatchewan relations and emphasizing Saskatchewan's role in aiding partner countries in achieving energy and food security. The Premier highlighted the significance of advancing agri-food production systems and sustainable agri-food products, emphasizing the need for sharing innovation and developing natural resources to ensure global food security.
Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) Collaboration
Of particular note was the discussion on the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS). Premier Scott Moe stressed the importance of this institute for comparative analysis and benchmark studies on sustainable agriculture. He expressed a willingness to share technologies and best sustainable production practices with India. The Premier also emphasized the need for collaborative efforts in researching the carbon footprint of crops like canola and wheat.
Both sides affirmed their commitment to continuity in discussions and regular dialogue to strengthen bilateral relations. Scott Moe agreed to explore areas of cooperation, knowledge exchange, and technology transfer between India and Saskatchewan through Technical Group meetings.
