India Shines as Global AI Hub: Key Outcomes from GPAI Summit at Bharat Mandapam

India, in its capacity as the Chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), concluded a highly successful GPAI Summit held at the Bharat Mandapam from December 12 to 14, 2023. The event, which featured the participation of global AI experts from GPAI, International Organizations, Industry/Startups, and Academia, marked a significant milestone in advancing discussions on the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence.

Over the course of the three-day summit, approximately 30 sessions were organized, bringing together diverse perspectives and fostering collaboration among key stakeholders. Notably, a portion of these sessions took place in closed-door meetings, hosting delegates and experts from GPAI, while others were open to the public and live-streamed, allowing for broader participation. The summit saw an impressive turnout, with more than 22,000 individuals attending, and over 15,000 AI enthusiasts participating virtually.

Key Outcomes from the GPAI Summit:

  • GPAI New Delhi Declaration: The summit saw the formulation of the GPAI New Delhi Declaration, establishing a consensus among GPAI members on advancing safe, secure, and trustworthy AI. The declaration also underscored a commitment to supporting the sustainability of GPAI projects.

  • Global Framework for Ethical AI: During the summit, the Indian Prime Minister issued a clarion call for collaborative efforts to develop a global framework for the ethical use of AI, emphasizing the need for shared responsibility in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.

  • India's Role in AI Leadership: The summit highlighted India as a major player in the field of AI talent and a hub for AI-related ideas, showcasing the nation's prowess in the AI landscape.

  • India Shines as Global Hub for AI Innovation: Acknowledging India's achievements, the summit reinforced the country's position as a global hub for AI innovation, attracting attention from international stakeholders.

  • Integration of AI Initiatives: The summit successfully brought together major global initiatives for AI, including the UN Advisory Group on AI and the UK AI Safety Summit, providing a comprehensive platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

  • AI Research Analytics and Knowledge Dissemination: Emphasis was placed on the AI Research Analytics and Knowledge Dissemination Platform (AIRAWAT) and the National Program on Artificial Intelligence, highlighting their pivotal roles in shaping India's AI ecosystem.

  • Showcasing Research Community: The summit provided a valuable platform for the research community to showcase both core and applied AI research, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing.

  • Startup Showcase: A dedicated expo provided an opportunity for the startup community to showcase their AI products and services, contributing to the vibrant AI ecosystem.

  • AI Pitch Fest: Upcoming startups had the chance to pitch their innovations and value-added products and services, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in the AI sector.

  • Multi-Stakeholder Approach: The summit underscored the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach in promoting AI awareness among the masses, especially youths and students. It highlighted the latest advancements in AI from various perspectives, including technology, policy, framework, industry, ethics, business, and academia.

With a focus on ethical and responsible AI development, the summit showcased India's commitment to fostering innovation while addressing the challenges and opportunities posed by this transformative technology.
