The Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), located in Mohali near Chandigarh, was inaugurated by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, in a significant step toward fostering scientific innovation and research.

Addressing the faculty and students, he emphasized the institute's pivotal role in undertaking cutting-edge research and generating innovative products, devices, and technologies in the field of Nanoscience and Technology for the nation's benefit. Dr Jitendra Singh highlighted the strategic importance of Nano-Science, coupled with Bio-Economy, in India's ambitious journey towards achieving a 5 Trillion Dollar Economy.

The institute's research areas include Agricultural Nanotechnology, Nanomedicine, Energy and Environmental Science, Quantum Materials and Device Physics, Nano Electronics, Microfluidics Based Technologies, and Nanobiotechnology. Dr Jitendra Singh outlined the vision of INST, aiming to emerge as a globally competitive research institution and make significant contributions to society through the application of nanoscience in agriculture, medicine, energy, and the environment.

The minister praised INST's outreach programs, emphasizing their impact on promoting science and technology among the nation's youth. The institute has directly engaged with over 15,000 students across 300 schools, spreading awareness about the potential of science as a career.

INST's roadshow has reached more than 50,000 students, showcasing the importance of science in daily life. Additionally, over 1,000 students from marginalized sections of society have received scientific aptitude training from INST in 24 schools and colleges nationwide.

Dr Jitendra Singh underscored INST's core mission of conducting cutting-edge research in nanoscience and nanotechnology, addressing global and local challenges in energy, environment, agriculture, healthcare, and quantum materials. The institute's motto, ‘Knowledge of Nanoscience for the Nation,’ reflects its commitment to advancing knowledge and educating young minds in nanoscience and technology.

Some of INST's core objectives include advancing knowledge, educating young minds in nanoscience and technology, offering advanced training courses, encouraging innovative scientific projects, promoting translational research from laboratory to industry, fostering interactions with the industry, and sensitizing the public and media about the advantages and safeguards of Nano Science and Technology.

Established under the NANO MISSION initiated by DST, INST commenced its activities on January 3, 2013, at its Transit Campus, Sector 64, Phase X, Mohali, Punjab. The new campus, spanning 35 acres in the Knowledge City at Sector-81 Mohali, Punjab, now serves as the hub for pioneering nano-research in India.
