JEE Advanced 2025: Eligibility Criteria Revised, Number of Attempts Increased to 3; Check Details Here

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, the organizing institute for JEE Advanced 2025, has announced updated eligibility criteria for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2025. Candidates are now allowed a third attempt at this prestigious engineering entrance exam. They can attempt JEE Advanced up to three times within three consecutive years, an increase from the previous limit of two attempts over two years. This change is expected to provide greater flexibility for aspiring engineers seeking admission to India’s premier IITs.

Under the revised criteria, candidates born on or after October 1, 2000, are eligible to apply. However, candidates from SC, ST, and PwD categories receive an additional five-year relaxation, making those born on or after October 1, 1995, eligible. JEE Advanced 2025 Eligibility Criteria 

Despite the increased number of attempts, the primary eligibility requirements for JEE Advanced remain largely unchanged. Candidates must be among the top 2,50,000 scorers in the BE/BTech Paper I of JEE Main 2025 across all categories. This cut-off may vary slightly due to tied scores within categories. The allocation of top 2,50,000 candidates follows specific category-based percentages: GEN-EWS (10%), OBC-NCL (27%), SC (15%), ST (7.5%), and Open (40.5%), with a 5% horizontal reservation for PwD candidates in each category.

In line with a Supreme Court decision, candidates holding an OCI/PIO card issued before March 4, 2021, will be considered Indian nationals for seat allocation purposes. However, they are not eligible for category-based reservation benefits, except for the Open-PwD category.  

Additional Academic Criteria

To qualify for JEE Advanced 2025, candidates must have completed their Class 12 exams with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects in 2023, 2024, or 2025. Those who attempted their Class 12 exams in 2022 or earlier are ineligible, barring certain exceptions. If a candidate's Class 12 results were announced after September 21, 2022, due to board delays, they may still be eligible if all other criteria are met. 

Restrictions on Prior IIT Admissions

Candidates who have previously accepted admission to any IIT program through JoSAA or had their admissions cancelled are not permitted to appear for JEE Advanced 2025. Exceptions apply for candidates admitted to preparatory courses at IITs in 2024 or those who withdrew or had their seats cancelled before the final round of allotment.
