JEE Main 2023: NTA Changes Eligibility Criterion for JEE-based Admissions, Exams Not Postponed
NTA has announced this additional criterion to make students eligible for admission to IIITs, NITs, and other GFTIs.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) changed the eligibility requirements for JEE Main 2023 on Tuesday, stating that students who have scored 75 percent marks or are in the top 20 percentile in Class XII of any education board would be eligible to seek admission to the National Institutes of Technology & Indian Institutes of Technology and appear for JEE Advanced 2023.
For admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs), the earlier standard required students to earn at least 75% of the possible points in their Class 12 grade together with a JEE Main rank.
NTA has declared this extra criterion that will qualify candidates for admission to IIITs, NITs, and other GFTIs even though there is no change to the current regulation of 75% board exam marks for JEE Main-based admissions.
According to NTA, this regulation was added in response to stakeholder concerns.
The NTA stated in the notification that, “numerous requests to change the requirement of 75% on the Class 12 examination have been received by the National Testing Agency. Candidates who meet the requirements for admission in the NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs whose admissions are based on the JEE (Main) ranks must have obtained at least 75% marks in the Class 12 examination or be in the top 20 percentile in the Class 12 examination held by respective Boards.”
"For SC/ST applicants, the qualifying marks in the Class 12 examination should be 65%," it added.
The notification was issued on the same day that the Bombay High Court rejected a petition filed by activist Anubha Srivastava Sahai asking to postpone the entrance test
The High Court has also been asked to order the removal of the 75%-mark requirement for JEE Main this year. The next court date in relation to this plea is set for February 21. By then, the first session of the entrance test will get over.
