Kerala Emerges as GI Tag Leader of FY 2022-23: GI Registry Data

According to the GI registry's data, Attappady Aattukombu Avara (beans), Attappady Thuvara (red gramme), Onattukara Ellu (sesame), Kanthaloor Vattavada Veluthuli (garlic), and Kodungallur Pottuvellari (snap melon) were chosen for the GI identification tag.

Aside from the six Kerala items, Mithila Makhana (aquatic fox nut) from Bihar was chosen for GI designation, followed by Alibag white onion from Maharashtra.

Tandur Redgram from Telangana, a local type of pea, Ladakh Raktsey Karpo Apricot from Ladakh, and Assam Gamosa handicrafts were also honoured. The Geographical Indication refers to a specific location and the products made in that region. As a result, 12 goods were chosen for recognition between April 2022 and March 2023, with two of them coming from outside the country.

Brandy De Jerez from Spain, which is made locally, was chosen, and Provolone Valpadana from Italy was also awarded GI status.

In FY22, up to 50 items from domestic and international markets were chosen for recognition, with Uttar Pradesh leading the way with seven GI tags, followed by Uttarakhand with six. Uttar Pradesh selected handcraft products such as Chunar Glaze Pottery, Banaras Zardozi, Mirzapur Pital Bartan, Banaras Wood Carving, Banaras Hand Block Print, Rataul Mango, and Mau saree for GI recognition.

Other Uttarakhand handmade items having the GI tag designation include Aipan, Munsyari Razma, Uttarakhand handcraft Ringal Craft, Tamta from Uttarakhand, Thulma (Handicraft), and Kumaon Chyura Oil.

According to the data, the famed Kanniyakumari Clove, wood carving from Kallakurichi, Karuppur Kalamkari paintings, and Narsinghapettai Nagaswaram (a wind instrument) were also selected for recognition from Tamil Nadu between 2021-22.
