Krishi Jagran Pays Tribute to Father of Indian Green Revolution Dr M S Swaminathan on World Food Day

The tribute ceremony was also graced by the esteemed presence of Swaminathan Sir’s daughter, Dr Soumya Swaminathan. Speaking at the tribute, Dr Soumya Swaminathan said, “My father always cared about the farmers. We have achieved the green revolution. However, he said that nutritional security and safety of nutritious food should be achieved."

Krishi Jagran convened a gathering of eminent agricultural experts to pay homage to the legendary Dr M S Swaminathan, Father of the Indian Green Revolution on the World Food Day at KJ Chaupal on October 16, 2023.

The tribute ceremony was also graced by the esteemed presence of Swaminathan Sir’s daughter, Dr Soumya Swaminathan. Her presence highlighted the enduring legacy of a family dedicated to advancing agriculture and healthcare.

The tribute ceremony commenced with a solemn two-minute silence reflecting a poignant moment in honour of the remarkable Dr M S Swaminathan.

Thereafter, the team of Krishi Jagran presented a heartfelt tribute video honouring Dr M S Swaminathan. It documented his illustrious life, pioneering work, and his unwavering commitment to food security and sustainable farming practices.

The Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Krishi Jagran, M C Dominic, and the Managing Director Shiny Dominic, extended their respects to Dr Swaminathan exemplifying widespread gratitude for his profound contributions to initiating the transformational movement of the Green Revolution in Indian agriculture.

Prominent agriculture experts gathered at the tribute ceremony including Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Chairperson, Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority; Mr Raju Kapoor, Director of Public and Industry Affairs, FMC Corporation; Dr Moni M, Former Director General, National Informatics Centre; Dr VV Sadamate, Former Advisor, Agriculture, Government of India.

Tarun Shridhar, Former Union Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, read out the dedicated article honouring Dr MS Swaminathan. Dr Malavika Dadlani, Former Joint Director, Research and Head, Division of Seed Science and Technology, IARI, read aloud a letter penned by Swaminathan Sir on the occasion of her retirement which portrayed the enduring impact of Dr Swaminathan’s mentorship on her professional journey.

Dr Soumya Swaminathan joined the tribute ceremony through Zoom call

Despite the physical distance, Dr Soumya Swaminathan joined the tribute ceremony for her father, Dr M S Swaminathan through a Zoom call. Her presence resonated strongly, emphasizing the significance of the occasion and describing how much Swaminathan Sir’s hard work transformed the agriculture landscape and ensured food security for millions.

Speaking at the tribute meeting, Dr Soumya Swaminathan said, “My father always cared about the farmers. We have achieved the green revolution. However, he said that nutritional security and safety of nutritious food should be achieved."
“As a doctor, I also agree with the message of father. Even in the twilight of his life, he used to talk about the farmers and the people of the country. It is our responsibility to continue the messages given by them," she said.

The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of the October edition magazine, featuring Dr M S Swaminathan on its cover. It was launched in English, Tamil, and Malayalam.
