Leaders and Experts Emphasise Agricultural Innovation at Drought Resistance Workshop

The University of Horticultural Sciences in Bagalkot concluded a comprehensive three-day workshop focused on enhancing drought tolerance in horticulture for dry land areas. The event, which concluded on Saturday, aimed to empower farmers with innovative strategies amidst challenging environmental conditions.

During the valedictory function, Member of Legislative Assembly J.T. Patil underscored the necessity for farmers to transition from chemical fertilisers to natural farming methods gradually. He urged increased commitment from university professors and scientists towards research, development, and extension activities to expedite the adoption of advanced agricultural technologies.

Legislative Concerns

Expressing dissatisfaction with the current progress, Patil emphasised the pivotal role of universities in promoting agricultural science and technology to directly benefit farmers, rather than merely producing academic graduates.

Stakeholder Perspectives

Member of Legislative Council P.H. Pujar echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of universities' tangible impact on agricultural communities. He called for intensified efforts from scientists to assist farmers in disease management, yield improvement, and securing fair prices for their produce.

Community Engagement

Member of Legislative Assembly H.Y. Meti urged scientists to align their research endeavors with the practical needs and aspirations of farmers, emphasising the importance of a collaborative approach toward agricultural innovation.

The workshop also recognised the contributions of progressive horticulture farmers from various regions. Notable awardees included T.N. Ravi, M.N. Venkat Reddy, Sharada Valmiki, Mallappa Kumbar, Chandrashekar Malipatil, Parashuram Bommanalli, Basavaraj Vandali, and Shivanand Manganavar, alongside individuals such as Beerappa Pujer, Paramanand Halli, Irappa Gani, Shivappa Subbannavar, Fakirappa Madar, and Mahantesh Nadagoudar.

University officials and stakeholders affirmed their commitment to continued collaboration and support for agricultural innovation, recognising it as a cornerstone for sustainable farming practices and rural prosperity.
