Man Breaks Guinness World Record by Eating 10 Hottest Chilies in Just 33 Seconds

The Carolina Reaper comes from the Capsicum chinense species of chilli pepper and has 1.5 million Scovilles - the measurement scale for how spicy a chilli gets - in the Guinness Book of Records.

California resident Gregory Foster broke his own record by eating 10 Carolina Reaper chillies in just 33 Seconds

A man from the United States has broken the Guinness World Record for the quickest time to consume ten Carolina Reaper chillies, the world's hottest peppers. According to Guinness World Records (GWR), California resident Gregory Foster set the record on September 17 by eating the chillies in 33.15 seconds.

Foster recently broke his own record of eating three Carolina Reaper chillies in 8.72 seconds, which he set just nine months ago. According to GWR, the Reapers are the hottest chilli peppers ever, outranking others such as the jalapeno and ghost peppers.

Scoville Heat Units are used by experts to determine how spicy chili is. According to GWR, the method determines 'spiciness' by determining the concentration of the chemical compounds responsible for the sensation.

Carolina Reapers have a Scoville Heat Unit count of 1,641,183, according to GWR. Foster is the owner of a hot sauce company and grows his own chilies on his farms.

"I guess it's the passion for pain," said Gregory.

Mitch Donnelly, a fellow American, was his competitor and had previously won a chili-eating competition organised by Foster. But he was beaten this time by Foster, who pushed through the pain of eating the chillies quickly.

He compared the experience to trying to eat charcoal as quickly as possible. "This is the one aspect of my job that I despise. But it's the one aspect of the job that everyone else enjoys the most "GWR was informed by Foster. He also mentioned that having milk and ice cream on hand is essential for competitive chili eating.

Some Facts About World's Hottest Chilli:

  • The Carolina Reaper chilli is 400 times spicier than the tasty Jalapeno peppers found on pizza, which only have a Scoville rating of 3,500.

  • It belongs to the same family as the famously fiery Scotch bonnet chilli, which is commonly used in West Indian cooking.

  • The white flesh closest to the seeds is what gives a chilli its kick, not the seeds themselves.
